This paper analyzes the issues and consequences of using key performance indicators (KPIs) in the public sector. A brief history of the public sector of Malaysia is discussed from independence to the present. The most recent development in public sector management has been the implementation of private sector practices in the form of KPIs. Additional suggestions for public sector reform are suggested.
