Bank Ownership and Lending Patterns During the 2008-2009 Financial Crisis: Evidence from Latin America and Eastern Europe

This paper uses bank-level data to measure the impact of bank ownership on credit growth in developing countries before and after the 2008 Financial Crisis. The differences in the behavior of foreign and domestic banks in Latin America is less extreme than in Eastern Europe. The paper examines the changes in credit growth in government-owned, domestic and foreign banks before and after the crisis.
